This is a stunning portrait of The Bishop. The quality of the piece cannot be overstated. It clearly illustrates Lenkiewicz's extraordinary ability to capture the very soul of his subject. The power of the piece is contained within the 'haunted' eyes of the sitter. This is achieved by Lenkiewicz's superb use of light bringing our focus to the heart of The Bishop - a technique reminiscent of Rembrandt. Truly superb. 

This is not the Bishop.

I think this man is the character who was called Mac [usually] but I don't know his proper name. He was a man who told me he had been an estate agent and he said that he had fallen on hard times when his wife left him and he'd lost everything. He was generally quite sad and may very well have been suffering from depression. I don't think he was an alcoholic but he may have been.

The Bishop was the 'street name' of Albert Edward Ernest Fisher; a name he espoused because of his name, 'Fisher', which was the same as the name of the man who was Arbishop of Canterbury at the time. Albert mostly lived at the Salvation Army Hostel but would also sleep out on occasion. He had red hair. He was an alcoholic and a very amusing character with a poetic side to him provided he was not insensible with drink.

Note: Paintings of a vagrant called Mac are not present in the list for the Vagrancy Exhibition (1973). Two are listed in the Diogenes Con Show (1975), however. Based on that, Annie's recollection, and the palette used in the picture, I have changed the attribution to the later Project.
