This is Project 2: Death and the Maiden, Exhibition list No. 2. A painter and Nimadi, with shoes. £67. At the subsequent exhibition at Wilmas Galleries, Coventry (Nov-Dec 1974) the painting was listed as: "Loaned by Mr Edward Kanter". The painting was thus bought by Edward Kanter, one of Robert's main patrons at the time, and on loan for the Coventry exhibition. The ownership is confirmed by the inscription, in pencil, "KANTER" on the canvas folded over the stretcher.

A photo of this work from around the time of the exhibition shows that the canvas was cut already then. The overlap folded over the stretcher shows that the painting was originally substantially larger, including i.a. the entire shoulder of Death. The horisontal cut is slightly crescentic, preserved in the upper part, but the lower part glued onto board (masonite) was cut clean along the board margins, with some loss on all four sides. The board has now been removed and the work is under conservation (May 2008).
