Inscribed: 'Study for papier-mâché / fibre-glass figure. Thirty-forty feet high. Two skeletons interelated [sic] in a circle; holding scythe's'. To be placed in centre of 'Relationships' exhibition, with back drop of corpses-rotting.
In front of figures, a large glass case containing: a group of actual rotting corpses, necessarily those of animals. Hygiene essential, public place etc.
May be possible to locate corpses of cow, sheep and dogs for case; preferably large animals.
Ideally, the location of human corpses wold be most appropriate, but unlikely, and illegal.
After some days the whole should become a seething mass of maggots and decay. Within two weeks or so, the flesh would have rotted sufficiently to move (?) the structure and bones. In two or three months the whole should be relatively unrecognizable and putrid. Eventually drying out, and hardening.
The final state could then be left in the sun and weather for some time, treated and hung as decoration and "art-work" on walls etc.
It is possible that the corpses could be enclosed in a double-glazed case ensuring absolute hygiene and odourless conditions.
Handwritten note:
The two skeletons could be related in such a way as to be 'scything' the visitors as they enter .. making two massive [?] circular motions with their scythes.
Possibly to make arm movements kinetic with the use of small electric machine and nylon wires.
To pivot at sacrum.
Note in Death and the Maiden Exhibition list:
IT IS INTENDED THAT THE COMPLETE THEME WILL BE EXHIBITED IN A VERY LARGE BUILDING SOMETIME IN THE YEAR 1976. THE TOTAL ‘RELATIONSHIPS’ EXHIBITION WILL CONSIST OF SOME 2,500 PAINTINGS.
